Sole Geometry Is a Measurement, Not a Personality Type

Wedge fitting gets described in terms of "sweepers" and "diggers", which is a useful shorthand and a poor specification. What actually decides bounce and grind is where the club enters the turf, how deep it goes, and how firm the ground is where you play. All three can be measured.

Grooves Before Geometry

Before we discuss a single new wedge, the ones in your bag get inspected. Groove depth is read at three positions across the face — low, centre and high — because wear is never uniform and the low grooves go first on a wedge that gets used properly.

Wedge grooves have a working life measured in rounds, not years, and the decline is gradual enough that most golfers never notice it happening. What they notice is that full-swing wedges have started releasing further than they used to, particularly out of any moisture.

We do not sharpen or re-cut grooves. Aftermarket re-grooving changes the face geometry away from the conforming specification and it removes material that was doing structural work. When the grooves are gone, the head is finished.

Reading Turf Entry

With the groove picture established, we move to the mat and to real turf where the season allows. What we are looking for is the entry point relative to the ball, the depth of the divot, and whether the sole is bruising the leading edge or the trailing edge first.

That reading, plus knowing where you play, produces the bounce recommendation. It is not a swing-type label — it is a geometry match between your delivery and the ground you deliver into.

Local note. Ohio spring turf is soft and the bunker sand at most courses around Cincinnati sits on a firm base. Both push our recommendations toward the higher end of the bounce band more often than a national average would suggest.

Closing the Gap at the Bottom

Modern iron sets have strengthened pitching wedge lofts to the point where a 44-degree PW and a 50-degree gap wedge is common. That six-degree step is fine. What is not fine is the arrangement we see constantly: a strong PW, a stock 52 that arrived with the set, and a 56 and 60 bought separately — producing an eighteen-yard hole in one place and a four-yard overlap in another.

  • Measure the PW first. Its actual loft, not its name, sets the top of the wedge ladder.
  • Four to six degrees between wedges is the workable band for most golfers.
  • Three wedges beat four when the four produce overlapping carries.
  • Shaft weight should step logically from the iron set rather than jumping eighty grams.

Shafts in Wedges

The most-ignored wedge specification. A wedge built with a shaft far heavier than the iron set feels dead on partial shots, which is where wedges spend most of their working life. One far lighter feels loose and produces inconsistent face control from the sand.

We fit wedge shafts as a continuation of the iron frequency map, with a deliberate step rather than a default. Whether that step is up, down or flat depends on how you use the club.
