Retail drivers are built to a length most golfers cannot control, with a shaft chosen for a weight band rather than a person. That is not a criticism of the manufacturers — it is what mass production requires. It does mean the driver is usually the club with the most available improvement.
Where the Yardage Is Actually Hiding
Golfers arrive at this bench expecting the answer to be a new head. It occasionally is. Far more often the gains sit in three unglamorous places: playing length, total club weight, and where on the face the ball is meeting it.
Strike location is the one nobody measures at home. A centre strike with a mediocre specification beats a half-inch heel strike with a perfect one, every single time and by a margin that dwarfs the difference between head models. So face tape goes on before anything else, and it stays on all session.

Playing length
We test shorter before longer, because shortening tightens strike dispersion far more often than it costs ball speed. A quarter of an inch is a real change at this end of the bag.

Total weight and balance
How heavy the whole club is, and where that mass sits. This sets tempo and it changes how the shaft feels before we have touched the shaft at all.

Shaft profile
Now that weight is fixed, we move through profiles at matched frequency. Tip behaviour is the variable that moves launch and dispersion, not the flex letter.

Loft sleeve and face angle
Last, because the correct sleeve setting depends entirely on everything above it. Setting loft first means resetting it three times.

Head, if it is still in question
Often it no longer is. When it is, we compare two or three at the settled specification rather than comparing heads at their own stock specs.
What We Watch on the Screen
Ball speed gets the attention and it is the least controllable of the numbers. These are the readings that actually drive decisions at this bench.

On chasing spin numbers. Very low spin only helps if your strike is consistent and your descent angle still holds the ball on the fairway. In Cincinnati's soft spring conditions, a slightly higher spin figure with a steeper descent frequently plays longer than the number that looks best on the screen.

- The two-way miss. Both sides in play usually points at length or tip behaviour rather than at your swing plane.
- The golfer who lost speed. A shaft that fitted five years ago may be fifteen grams too heavy for how you swing now.
- The high-spin ballooner. Loft, tip stiffness and strike height together, in that order.
- Anyone who bought online. Stock specifications and your specification are unrelated by default.
