The EI Curve Versus the Flex Letter
One is a measurement taken at intervals along a physical object. The other is a letter chosen by a marketing department. They are not competing sources of the same information.
There is no standards body governing what R, S or X mean on a golf shaft. Each manufacturer picks its own bands, and those bands drift over time as the market drifts. This is well known among fitters and largely invisible to golfers, who reasonably assume that a letter printed on a product means something consistent.
On our bench we have measured shafts stamped with the same letter that sat thirty cycles per minute apart once assembled to the same length. Thirty CPM is not a subtlety. That is comfortably more than a full flex step in most families, which means one manufacturer's Regular can genuinely be stiffer than another's Stiff.
What EI Actually Plots
EI stands for the product of the material's elastic modulus and the section's moment of inertia. In plain terms it is a measure of bending resistance at a specific point along the shaft. Measure it every few inches from tip to butt, plot the results, and you get a curve describing how stiffness is distributed along the length.
That curve is the closest thing to a complete mechanical description of a shaft that exists in a form a fitter can use. Two shafts with identical curves will behave identically. Two shafts with the same flex letter can have curves that look nothing alike.
Reading a Curve
You do not need to interpret the units to get value from an EI plot. The shape is what matters.
A curve that rises steeply toward the butt describes a shaft that is firm where the hands are and softer further down. That tends to feel stable through transition and produce a higher launch. A curve that is relatively flat across the middle and rises sharply near the tip describes a shaft that resists the head lagging behind, which lowers dynamic loft and generally reduces spin.
The interesting region is where two candidate curves cross. If two shafts are similar through the butt and diverge only in the last eight inches, the difference you will feel is almost entirely in ball flight rather than in the swing.
Where the Letter Still Earns Its Keep
Three cases, and it is worth being fair about them.
Within a single family from a single manufacturer, the letters are internally consistent. Moving from R to S inside one model line is a genuine, predictable step. The letters only break down when you compare across brands.
For a first pass in a retail environment where no measurement is available, the letter narrows the field from everything to something. It is a bad specification and a serviceable filter.
And for a golfer at the extremes — very slow or very fast, very smooth or very abrupt — the letter gets you into a plausible neighbourhood. It is the vast middle of the market where the letter tells you almost nothing useful.
What We Use Instead
Assembled butt frequency, measured on our own analyzer with a fixed procedure, plus a three-zone deflection read for distribution. That combination is not as precise as a manufacturer's EI rig, and it is measured rather than asserted, which makes it comparable across every shaft on our rack.
The practical effect during a session is that we can say "this one is eleven cycles softer than what you are playing, with a firmer last third" instead of "this one is a Stiff". The first statement can be checked. The second cannot.
If You Are Shopping Alone
Look for manufacturers who publish profile data. Several do, in varying levels of detail, and their willingness to publish is itself a reasonable signal about how the shaft was designed. Where profile data exists, compare curves rather than letters.
Where it does not exist, and you are choosing between two options on a letter alone, weight is the more reliable variable. Getting weight right and stiffness approximately right produces a better outcome than the reverse, because weight is honestly reported and stiffness is not.
