Why Your CPM Changed After a Regrip

Nothing structural changed. The shaft is the same shaft, the head is the same head, and the analyzer is reading four cycles lower than it did last spring. Here is where those cycles went.

A golfer brought a set back after a regrip elsewhere and asked why the numbers on their new sheet did not match the one we had produced eighteen months earlier. Every club read between three and six cycles lower. The clubs had not been touched otherwise.

This surprises people because a grip sits at the butt end, which intuitively feels like the part of the club that has nothing to do with how the shaft bends. Intuition is wrong here, for reasons that are entirely mechanical.

How the Measurement Works

A frequency analyzer clamps the butt end of the club, hangs a known mass at the tip or uses the head itself, deflects the club, and counts oscillations per minute. It is a beam test. Anything that changes the effective beam — its length, its mass distribution, or how rigidly it is held — changes the number.

The grip affects two of those three.

The analyzer is not measuring the shaft. It is measuring the assembled club, and the grip is part of the assembly.

Cause One: Clamp Behaviour

The clamp bites onto the grip, not onto bare steel or graphite. A soft, thick rubber grip compresses under clamp pressure in a way a firm cord grip does not. That compression effectively softens the boundary condition at the clamped end, which lowers the measured frequency.

The magnitude is not trivial. Swapping from a firm cord grip to a soft tacky one, with nothing else changed, can move a reading two to four cycles on our bench. It is not the shaft getting softer. It is the clamp getting less rigid.

Cause Two: Mass at the Butt

Grip weights vary more than golfers expect. A standard rubber grip might be fifty grams; a lightweight option can be under thirty; some jumbo and putter-style grips run well over eighty. That mass sits at the clamped end, where it contributes to the oscillating system.

Adding mass at the butt lowers the measured frequency slightly. It also, separately, changes swingweight and total club weight, both of which affect how the club feels regardless of what the analyzer says.

Cause Three: Build-Up Tape

Extra wraps of tape under the grip increase both the diameter at the clamp and the mass. Four wraps to build a midsize feel out of a standard grip is a common and perfectly reasonable request, and it will shift the reading. Uneven build-up across a set — which we find more often than we would like, usually from a hurried regrip — shifts different clubs by different amounts and puts a kink in an otherwise clean frequency slope.

When It Matters and When It Does Not

Most of the time it does not matter at all, in the sense that the club plays the same as it did before. The shaft did not change. If the grip is the size you want and the set is consistent, a few cycles of measurement drift is a bookkeeping issue rather than a performance one.

It matters in three cases.

When you are comparing sheets across years to detect real change, an unrecorded grip swap contaminates the comparison. That is why our sheets record grip model, size and wraps alongside the frequency.

When the build-up is uneven across a set, the frequency slope develops a kink that is not in the shafts. Chasing that kink by re-shafting a club would be fixing the wrong thing.

And when a golfer is genuinely on the boundary between two flexes, a grip change that moves four cycles can be the difference between a club that feels right and one that does not — though in that case the grip is a symptom of how marginal the original choice was.

The Bookkeeping Fix

Record the grip. Model, core size, wraps, and the date. If the grip is part of the assembly and the assembly is what gets measured, then a frequency reading without a grip note is an incomplete record.

When we regrip a set here, the new specification goes on the sheet next to the old one and both readings are kept. That way a genuine change — a shaft that has been overstressed, a head that has come loose — is visible against the noise instead of buried in it.
